*unfamiliar word/s* MITIGATE means “to lessen” or “to make less severe”
First and foremost, what is Global Warming? Well, Global Warming is defined as the increase in temperature of the earth’s atmosphere. It has done a lot of damage to our ozone layer and we all have felt its consequences. Sad to say, there is no way for us to reverse the damage that it has done. All we can do now is to help mitigate Global Warming so that we can somehow lessen its harmful effects. As a student, here are some of the simple ways that I have thought of:
- 3 Rs- I will reduce, reuse, and recycle.
Ya I know. It’s a very common answer but it’s also one of the simplest things that we can do to help mitigate the effects of Global Warming.
- I will segregate my garbage.
Have you noticed the different colored trash bins around the FEU campus? This is an example of waste segregation. We can be a lot of help by simply putting our trash in their corresponding bins.
- I will participate in clean up drives.
- I will join organizations concerned with the environment.
Being active in such organizations will broaden my understanding on how to save “Mother Earth”. I will also be able to apply what I have learned through participating in the organization’s activities. As a bonus to that, it is a good way to make new friends, not just on facebook, but in real life as well.
Planting trees is one of the best ways. Why? Trees consume carbon dioxide which is one of the great contributors in Global Warming. In addition to that, trees also provide a cooling effect in the atmosphere. We might actually have a chance of having snow in the Philippines! haha joking
But seriously, we should plant more trees—plants will also do
- I will not and never will smoke.
Cigarettes, due to its chemical components, emit or produce gases that are harmful not just to human health but also to the environment as well—So DON’T SMOKE. It’s also a way of saying “NO” to bad breath. XD
- I will walk whenever possible.
Besides from the good health benefits, it will also help lessen the use of fuel which lessens the smoke immited due to its use. If your destination is just a few blocks away, why not take a walk? If all of us does this, imagine how much we will save and how a great help this would be in mitigating the production of greenhouse gases. Plus, it’s a good way to burn calories. XD Riding a bike is also a good idea.
- I will not leave appliances (ex. tv) on standby and unplug them when not in use.
Appliances also consume energy when in standby so it is better if you just turn it off –that’s the purpose of the “off button”—-and unplug it whenever not in use. It’s a great help in reducing your energy consumption— which will also lessen the amount on your electricity bill XD.
- I’ll turn the lights off when not needed especially when it’s day time.
The sun light’s free! Make use of it.
- I will minimize my use of plastic and styrofoam.
These are known to be non-biodegradable and great contributors of greenhouse gases when burned. Do you know the “green bags” (I’m not sure if that’s what they call ‘em) they sell at SM?? You can use that when you shop instead of plastic bags. You just helped in protecting the environment. Plus, it’s a good fashion statement.
- I will use recycled (ex. paper, pencil, etc…) and environment friendly products whenever possible.
Recycled products like notebooks are usually cheaper so it’s budget friendly .It’s not as attractive as other products but it serves the same purpose so there’s nothing really wrong with it.On the other hand, environment friendly products such as insect repellants that contain no harmful chemical compounds cost a bit more, but it’ll surely be of great help. Money can be earned but the effects of Global Warming are IRREVERSIBLE.
Trash bins are everywhere, just look for them.
- I will share what I know.
Sharing what you know will motivate other people and will make them aware of such things. Simple blog posts like this is one of the best ways to do so.
Even if we are just students, there are multiple ways for us to help save and protect the environment. And these are just some of them, so there are NO excuses for us not to do anything. We must bear in mind that not a single, not even two, three, or ten persons can do this by themselves. We should cooperate and to this together. It’s not just for other people. It’s for our own good as well. Why hesitate in doing something so little when we can do so much with it?
